Expert Sokolova: Nobel Laureates' Discoveries Helped Partially Restore Sight to a Blind Man
Optogenetics in medicine: technologies have helped restore vision to a blind patient and open new avenues for treating depression.

Fundamental discoveries in optogenetics made by pioneers Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel are now being actively introduced into clinical practice.
As noted by Evgenia Sokolova, head of the Health Sciences master's program at ITMO University, scientists’ developments are already yielding real results.
Specifically, several years ago, optogenetics was successfully applied for the first time to partially restore vision in a man who had completely lost it due to retinal degeneration.
Beyond ophthalmology, the optogenetic approach is in demand in neurobiology and psychiatry: scientists use it to identify new molecular targets for developing innovative antidepressant medications.
Who is affected
с дегенеративными заболеваниями сетчатки, незрячие и слабовидящие люди, а также пациенты с резистентными формами депрессии.
