Beryozka Kindergarten in Dubossary Restores Vision for 80% of Its Pupils
Restoring 100% Vision: The History and Daily Life of Beryozka Kindergarten

The specialized preschool institution in Dubossary, known as Kindergarten No. 8 or Beryozka, successfully corrects vision problems in young children. Upon completing the program, eight out of ten pupils achieve perfectly normal vision.
Since 1986, the institution has focused on helping children with ophthalmological conditions, using a comprehensive medical and educational approach, although its roots date back to the mid-20th century.
From Power Plant Workers to Ophthalmology
The facility was established in 1952 during the peak of the local hydroelectric power station's construction. Initially, it operated as a standard nursery to support the families of builders and maintenance staff at the Dubossary Hydroelectric Power Station. Thirty-four years later, its focus shifted radically, and the institution was repurposed for the rehabilitation and education of children with visual impairments.
Comprehensive Approach to Rehabilitation
Today, the institution operates four specialized compensatory-type groups, enrolling around forty preschoolers. Admission begins at age two and requires a medical referral from an ophthalmologist and approval from a specialized commission. The medical and educational staff tailor the process to the individual physiological needs of each child.
Monitoring and Adaptation
Continuous monitoring plays a crucial role, with the in-house ophthalmologist tracking even the slightest changes in recovery dynamics. In parallel, a special education teacher organizes both individual and group sessions. As a result, the children not only improve their visual perception but also acquire essential skills in spatial navigation and daily self-care.
Who is affected
Детсад «Берёзка» демонстрирует важность ранней реабилитации, но использует устаревшую медицинскую модель, фокусируясь на «исцелении» и «норме», а не на инклюзии и развитии навыков жизни с особенностями зрения.
